Sustainable driving, lower CO2 consumption, a paradigm shift towards electromobility: the automotive industry has some difficult demands to satisfy. Even modern transmission concepts are thus faced with entirely new challenges. Current trends and possibilities will be the subject of the international VDI conference ‘Transmissions in vehicles’ to be held by the VDI Wissensforum on 22nd and 23rd June 2010 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Vehicle transmission developers and users will be gathering at this important industry meeting-point now in its tenth incarnation.

Conference director is Dr.-Ing. Hans-Joerg Domian, Director of New Products and Methods, Design Tasks, ZF Friedrichshafen AG. Opening papers tackle the subjects of the ‘Future of driveline development, potential CO2 savings and the rôle of electrification’ as well as ‘Electromobility: an outlook for industry’. The third paper, entitled ‘Evaluation of transmission concepts from the viewpoint of a racing driver’, will be delivered by ex-racing driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, representing the Volkswagen Group's motor sports division.

Alongside future-oriented transmission components for electric and hybrid vehicles, the program will also include current developments in the fields of double-clutch and automatic transmissions, manual transmissions and all-wheel drives, efficiency, components, materials and production engineering as well as clutches and operating strategies. The machines section is entirely new: here attendees can learn about, for example, technical trends in agricultural machines, new developments in construction machinery drives, infinitely variable power take-off drives or improvements in the ease of gearshifting.

As a new highlight, attendees may look forward to the live hands-on transmission demo. During presentation of the papers on ‘8HP70H: ZF's multihybrid transmission’ and on ‘Modular 7-gear dual-clutch transmissions as four-wheel drive version for a sports car of the highest performance class’ the corresponding transmissions will be in operation and filmed by a camera. Live pictures will be screened in large format in the auditorium, thus allowing the audience to closely follow what is being presented in the papers.

A technical exhibition will be held alongside the conference, concentrating for the first time on transmissions for commercial vehicles, buses and machines.

Also held in parallel is the 1st VDI ‘Transmissions in the commercial vehicle’ conference, which all transmission conference attendees can visit free of charge.
