Order in the book jungle: Centraal Boekhuis future-proofs its logistics system
Logistics service provider Centraal Boekhuis, headquartered in Culemborg (Netherlands) specializes in the distribution of books. Being the link between publishing groups and book retailers, the company attaches great importance to reliable and efficient deliveries. To this end, Centraal Boekhuis has operated a five-aisle automated unit-load storage/retrieval system since 1984.

- Order in the book jungle: Centraal Boekhuis future-proofs its logistics system.
The first system expansion was undertaken in the 1990s, but ongoing growth and ever more intensive system utilization around the clock, on at least five days a week made modernization imperative. Specialists from viastore systems developed a comprehensive modernization concept, collaborating closely with Centraal Boekhuis staff. The focus was placed on higher system availability and lower maintenance costs as well as the use of state-ofthe- art technology, high user friendliness and good spare parts support. Various mechanical components such as trays, guide rollers and horizontal lateral slide rollers were replaced due to wear and the loor crane rails were re-ground.
At the same time, various electronic components such as bus bars and frequency converters as well as software and hardware components also required replacing. This work was carried out in several steps, mostly over the weekends, so as to hinder operations at Centraal Boekhuis as little as possible. With a manageable modernization investment, Centraal Boekhuis has extended the life cycle of its unit-load warehouse by several years. This means that the company can continue to maintain its excellent logistics services in the years to come.
