New Demag energy-saving motor achieves lasting cost reduction

  • Energy-efficient solution for 100 per cent duty factor
  • Environmentally friendly drive solution fulfils efficiency class IE2
  • Available from 1 April 2011

With its ZBE/ZNE cylindrical-rotor motor, Demag Cranes has extended its product range to include a newly developed energy-saving motor. The new motor enables the company to add a drive to its product range that meets the requirements of efficiency class IE2 (High Efficiency), which applies all over the world.

Simultaneously improving cost and environmental impact

With effect from 16 June 2011, the EuP Directive (EuP = Energy using Products) specifies that only low-voltage AC motors with an output of between 0.75 and 375 kilowatts may be placed on the market if they correspond at least to efficiency class IE2 (IE = International Efficiency) when covered by the Directive. This rule is based on targets agreed to protect the climate and to cut CO2 emissions.

Demag ZBE/ZNE motors meet the requirements of the new international standard defined in IEC 60034-30:2008. These energy-saving motors make it possible to save costs and, at the same time, to reduce the burden on the environment. ZBE/ZNE units are designed to be used as drives for duty factors of up to 100 per cent at ambient temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius and at altitudes of up to 1,000 metres above sea level. They are suitable for operation in continuous roller conveyors for uninterrupted materials handling as well as for long-term applications, such as for driving pumps, fans or compressors. The motors can be connected direct to mains supply or operated with frequency inverters.

The new Demag ZBE/ZNE cylindrical-rotor motors will be available from 1 April 2011 in 4-pole variants with a brake (ZBE) and without a brake (ZNE) for outputs from 0.75 to 45 kilowatts. The motors are adapted to meet varying regional voltage and frequency requirements.

Thanks to their efficiency, which is up to five per cent higher, ZBE/ZNE motors require less primary energy for the same mechanical shaft output in nominal operation. Consequently the operating costs are also reduced, which results in a higher return on investment.

New components in a wide range of drives

Efficient ZBE/ZNE cylindrical-rotor motors supplement the comprehensive range of products offered by Demag Cranes, which, besides motors, also includes gearboxes, wheels and frequency inverters, adding a solution which meets the requirements of classification to IE2 even for continuous operation. The focus of drives offered by Demag remains complete drive solutions for starting and stopping applications for cranes and materials handling equipment in intermittent service with a duty factor of up to 60 per cent. Even though these drives are not subject to the EuP Directive, they are also developed and manufactured to meet energy efficiency requirements. Their high efficiency makes it possible to provide cost-effective and environmentally friendly drive solutions.

Demag ZBA/ZNA and ZBF cylindrical-rotor motors and Demag KBF conical-rotor motors are designed for a wide range of travel applications and are mainly used for reversing duty with creep positioning speeds. Depending on the application, they can be operated with frequency inverters or with the line power supply. Demag KBA conical-rotor brake motors are designed for starting/stopping applications with short cycle times and high positioning accuracy and are particularly suitable for high switching frequencies with the ability to accommodate extremely high braking energy.
