Made-to-Measure Inliner Bags for Large Containers: BEUMER stretch hood optimizes packaging in the chemical industry
In the chemical industry, products such as plastic pellets (polyethylene and polypropylene) are either sold in small sacks or in large “octatainers”, which are octagonal containers made of corrugated cardboard. Previously, workers used to spread out a plastic bag (inliner) inside these containers by hand before they were filled with pellets. However, this time-consuming method has many disadvantages. If the inliner is not aligned properly, the plastic film does not lie flat on the inside of the container. This can cause it to tear due to tension and heat dissipation from the pellets which are subsequently filled into the container. If this happens, the high-quality pellets are considered contaminated and have to be disposed of. In addition, the inliner – and thus the product – does not take up the full volume of the container.

- The inliner created by the BEUMER stretch hood® fits perfectly against the side wall during filling.
The BEUMER stretch hood from the BEUMER Group, with headquarters in Beckum, Germany, provides a solution to this problem. This high-performance packaging machine does not use separate plastic bags to produce inliners. The plastic film for the inliners comes from a roll instead. The BEUMER stretch hood cuts and seals the film. This allows the length to be adjusted freely, depending on the setting of the machine. The packaging machine then crumples up the inliner slightly in order to guide it over the edge of the octatainer. The inliner falls into the center of the container by its own weight and fits perfectly against the side wall during filling. The inliner is then sealed and the lid is put on the container. After this, the octatainer can be transported back to the BEUMER stretch hood so that the product can be secured. A film stretch hood is applied at this point. One single BEUMER stretch hood is enough for both processes – creating/inserting the inliner and securing the product. No other components are required. This system was developed at the Düsseldorf and Germersheim sites in collaboration with Smurfit Kappa.
