German machine tools play in the premier league when it comes to energy-efficiency: Sector to showcase Blue Competence® at METAV 2010
At METAV 2010 (23 to 27 February 2010) in Düsseldorf, 15 machine tool manufacturing companies and their cooperation partners will be presenting solutions for improving the energy-efficiency of machine tools, as part of the “Blue Competence® – Taking the initiative on energy and environment” campaign.

The German manufacturers had taken this issue fully on board at a very early juncture. The background here is firstly the decision taken by the European Commission to put machine tools on the list of products requiring examination under the EuP Directive (2009/125/EG). Secondly, the aim is to develop awareness for responsible husbandry of natural resources, not least among the users of production technology, and to join forces in formulating new approaches and achieving continual improvements in the ongoing state of the art.
"What we want to show on the joint booth at METAV 2010 is that German vendors are playing in the premier league here and are even a whole lot better than their competitors", emphasises Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director of the METAV organisers VDW (German Machine Tool Builders' Association). The exhibitors involved will be presenting not only individual aspects on the component level, such as energy recovery and efficient drive technology, but also energy-efficient process developments, and design-enhanced machinery concepts. They are thus underlining their corporate capabilities in terms of developing and marketing products that in addition to productivity quality and reliability also offer a contribution toward sustainable production technology.
The following firms are participating: Bielomatik Leuze, Neuffen, Bilz Werkzeugfabrik, Ostfildern, Bosch Rexroth, Lohr am Main, Brinkmann Pumpen K. H. Brinkmann, Werdohl, Chiron-Werke, Tuttlingen, DMG Vertriebs und Service, Bielefeld, Heller Maschinenfabrik, Nürtingen, Index-Werke, Esslingen, Kapp, Coburg, Klingelnberg, Hückeswagen, Liebherr-Verzahntechnik, Kempten, Profiroll Technologies, Bad Düben, Schneeberger, Höfen / Enz, Schwäbische Werkzeugmaschinen, Schramberg-Waldmössingen, Siemens, Erlangen
The joint booth is to be found in Hall 16, Booth B9.
The symposium aims to provide fruitful insights into energy saving options for users and manufacturers of production machinery
To complement the joint booth, the Institute for Production Management, Technology and Machine Tools (PTW) in Darmstadt has joined forces with the VDW to organise a symposium on 24 February 2010 entitled "Energy-efficient machine tools – requirements and solutions for effective production technology".
This symposium is designed to illuminate the customers' requirements for energy-efficient machine tools, as exemplified by solutions from machine tool and component manufacturers "Our aim with this symposium is to disseminate and discuss the very latest results and developments from the academic and business communities ", explains Eberhard Abele, Director of the PTW, which has . for many years now been researching the efficient utilisation of energy in machine tools, and is heading numerous joint projects featuring top-ranking experts form the industrial sector.
At the METAV symposium, companies like BMW, Dingolfing, Bosch Rexroth, Lohr am Main, Gildemeister, Bielefeld, Index-Werke, Esslingen, Kapp, Coburg, Knoll, Bad Saulgau, Rittal, Herborn, and Siemens, Erlangen, will provide interesting suggestions and valuable tips for energy-aware design, construction and system integration of the machinery concerned
Further information, the entire programme of presentations, and the registration form, are available on the internet at www.energieeffiziente-werkzeugmaschine.de.
METAV 2010 in Düsseldorf
The next METAV will be held in Düsseldorf from 23 to 27 February 2010. In the even-numbered years it has firmly established itself as one of the premier technological shop-windows for the entire production technology and automation sectors in Germany for producers and customers from all over Europe. The METAV showcases the entire spectrum of production technology. The principal focuses are on machine tools, production systems, high-precision tools, automated material flow, computer technology, industrial electronics and accessories. The METAV's visitor target group includes all major sectors of industry, particularly machine and plant construction, the automotive industry and its component suppliers, the iron and steel producers, plus the non-ferrous-metal industry and the craft sector. For these customer groupings, numerous supporting events will at the next METAV be highlighting topical issues from the field of production technology.
