Energy efficiency cares for more power
In every fifth Company from the plastics processing industry, energy efficiency is not yet considered a relevant issue. This is the result of a survey conducted among 150 experts from the VDI-Society Materials Engineering and the VDI-Wissensforum. These Companies give away opportunities for cost reduction, commented Professor Ansag Jaeger, deputy chairman from the VDI-Technical Division Plastics Engineering. Energy efficient economies are de facto a competitive advantage for the plastics processing industry. However, not all Companies understand the relevance of these issues. More than one third of the Companies interviewed do not have any person in charge for energy optimisation.
Notably, 45 percent of the surveyed businesses have already developed a concept to reduce energy consumption. However, these concepts should not only be developed but also implemented; remarks VDI expert Jaeger. Only 23 percent have invested until now in energy efficient building service engineering and only 7 percent in process technologies. Certainly, there are plenty of means to energy cost reduction. As example, 64 percent of the respondents see production lines as one of the ways of great potential. Nevertheless, Companies should not only focus on individual facilities but also incorporate all components.
Kurt Geber, chairman of the VDI-Technical Committee Materials Preparation Technology and President of Allod Werkstofftechnik GmbH from Burgbernheim points up how to lower costs in the praxis: with a clever production planning, for instance, facilities with less non-operation periods can effectively reduce energy costs.
