BEUMER Supplies Baggage Conveying System for Frankfurt Airport: Large-Scale Order for Terminal 1

As part of construction of the new Northwest runway at Frankfurt Airport, Terminal 1 is to be extended by a new departure gate. The airport owner and operator, Fraport AG, has commissioned BEUMER, a leading manufacturer of intralogistics, to provide the necessary equipment for the extension of the baggage conveying system. The order has a volume of about 25 million Euros. This is one of the most important orders in the company history of BEUMER Maschinenfabrik. The intralogistics experts based in Beckum participated in a tender procedure in the European Union in summer 2009. BEUMER succeeded in obtaining the contract despite intense competition.

The extension work at the airport has been under way since January 2009. An additional handling rate of six million passengers per year from departure gate A is to be realised at Terminal 1. The new departure gate A comprises seven additional airport building positions for Airbus A 380 aircraft and three additional apron positions. It is important to the airport operator that the time for changing planes of 45 minutes is kept after completion of the airport extension. These are stringent requirements that are to be fulfilled by the baggage conveying system. A high value is set on a sophisticated and reliable system control and monitoring since the system is to convey "time-critical" baggage.
The baggage conveying system at Frankfurt has constantly been extended and improved in its performance and reliability over the years. Among other things, BEUMER was awarded several contracts for integrating a baggage control system comprising the supply and installation of systems and robots for more than 45 million Euros in 2005. Within the scope of the new extension, BEUMER will now supply a conveying system with a length of about 7.3 kilometres for Terminal 1, enabling the transport of outbound baggage in containers.
This system will be equipped with about 1,650 drive units, 1,930 conveying elements and 110 switch units and merges. The baggage control system will be fully integrated into the system. Installation will start in summer 2010. The handover of the system is scheduled for August 2012.
